This past week, my group and I have been working on our music marketing project. At first, we were disappointed to find out that our music genre was rock. Once we started working on this project, we figured that this project was actually going to be fun. The first thing we did is start brainstorming. We created a google doc to note all of our ideas down.
We all read the directions and immediately wrote our song options. We listened to all of them while reading the song lyrics at the same time. We all agreed that "Many Shades of Black" by The Raconteurs. We thought the lyrics would be easy enough to turn into a music video but also fun.
After we chose the song, we started discussing the aesthetic of the brand. Here is where we ran into our first challenge/problem. When discussing the music video, we realized that we can't be singing in the video because it was a man singing. This is where we agreed that we would have to do a story as the music video. We planned out the music video and started writing our ideas and storyline down so that we wouldn't forget any of our ideas.
Once we finalized the idea of the music video, we went ahead and discussed how we wanted our music brand to look like and who would be the artist who would be the face of the music company. We started playing around with some aesthetics and we agreed on one. We made a Pinterest board where we can all collaborate and add ideas.
Once we got the aesthetic, we needed to figure out a name. We wanted the name of the artist to be different from his actual name. We decided on the name "Obsid!an." The exclamation mark added a touch that would make the name unique from other band or artist names. We thought it was a fun and cool artist name to have.
The designing of the brand has been super fun to do. Designing the merchandise like vinyls, CD's, hoodies, sweatshirts, and more has been entertaining for me to do. The album cover for the song and creating the profiles has definitely made this project better for us as a group and fun! Here are some of the designs I have made:
Our next step is recording the music video! We have the whole plan written down, and the location confirmed too. We wanted the music video to be the part of the project we worked hardest on. We didn't want to film it at school, we wanted this music video to look somewhat like a real, professional one. Although we're just high school students with a phone as a camera, we'll work our very hardest on it!
I can't wait to finish this project and show our classmates our artist and brand!
