This week, I'm doing some research on movie genre's. I decided to base my research on drama. The drama genre has been one of the most popular genre's in movies.
When is comes to genre conventions for drama, there are a few techniques for capturing the perfect dramatic moment. One of the most famous is a slow zoom or better known as a slow motion. This captures the moment in a very dramatic effect. Making the scene last longer and having that full "drama"moment. Adding narration also creates a more dramatic moment. By adding dialogue to a scene, (like a narrator telling a plot) it makes it easier for the viewer to understand what is happening in the movie. Let's talk about a popular one in... musicals! When it comes to musicals, people are always breaking into song. This makes the scene more dramatic.
The main target audience for drama films are people who love to feel emotions and people who love a complex storyline. The directors of the movie want to keep the audience involved. In that way, there are more character-driven stories to keep the viewers interested.
Hidden Figures (2016) directed by Theodore Melfi fits into the dramatic genre. Hidden Figures is a historical drama featuring three brilliant African-American women employees working for NASA during the famous space race. The many struggles they face while trying to get humans on the moon are the main idea of the entire movie. Creating a dramatic film that gives off a beautiful message in the end.
